Indian Kids Postcard Project 2010

“Mythic Creatures”

This is a gallery of Original Postcard Art done by the teenagers of Apne Aap Womens Collective.

Hindu Mythology abounds with Mythic Creatures some are avatars of gods themselves, like Varaha, the boar avatar of Vishnu, others are their vehicles like Garuda, the mount of Vishnu and Nandi, the mount of Shiva and the serpent Shesha upon whom Krishna is reclining. The Naga snake deities are still very much revered in South India. In the epic Ramayana, the mermaid helps Hanuman the white monkey to build a bridge to Lanka and rescue Sita. Then there is the shape shifting buffalo demon, Mahisha, who is overcome by the powerful goddess Durga. The girls had great fun doing these postcard and imagining their own mythical creatures!
